IPAF MEWP training is strongly recommended for MEWP operators working in the UK and NI, and may be required on some ROI construction sites.
Height for Hire Operator Training on MEWPs and Harness is an alternative MEWP course suitable for MEWP operators working in Republic of Ireland.
Duration
1 day typically from 8.15am to 4.30pm – Classroom Theory & Practical’s.
eLearning
IPAF’s eLearning module is part of its full training programme for Operators of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). The eLearning module delivers flexibility and interactive tools, with the same emphasis on practical training.
Operator eLearning does not replace practical training. Trainees who complete the online session must still pass a supervised test at one of our IPAF-Approved Training Centre and must successfully complete practical training and testing before being issued a ePAL operator licence.
What type of MEWPs are covered under IPAF 3a, 3b ,1b 1a Operator Training?
MEWP is an overall name for powered access platforms which can refer to any type of Mobile Elevating Work Platform.
The IPAF 3a Operator category covers the safe use of Mobile Vertical machines generally called Scissor Lifts.
The IPAF 3b Operator category covers the safe use of Mobile Boom machines which are self-propelled booms and may be articulated or telescopic booms and can be driven at height.
The IPAF 1b Operator category covers Static Boom machines which are generally fitted with outriggers and cannot be driven while elevated. 1b Static Boom is an overall category name which includes Van-mounted booms, Truck-mounted booms, Trailer-mounted booms or Spider booms on tracks or wheels.
The IPAF 1a category allows travelling with the MEWP in its transport position (driven into position from the platform).

On-site training
On-site training on your premises is also available anywhere in Ireland and UK subject to minimum numbers and having the MEWPs available on site. A suitable room would be required for on-site training for the theory section of the course, and MEWPs for the practical training for categories required. The MEWP Operator’s Manual and a copy of the current 6 monthly Certificate of Thorough Examination for each MEWP is required.
Certification
Successful delegates will receive an IPAF ePAL digital licence & digital certificate for MEWPs trained on & valid for 5 years. Photographs for the operator licence are taken on site and included in the price. A physical licence can be obtained at an additional cost

Trainee Requirements
Candidates for IPAF MEWP courses must be at least 16 years of age. They must be medically fit to operate machinery.
PPE Requirements
Trainees must have the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment with them to operate the MEWPs i.e. Hard Hat, Safety Boots, Hi-Visibility Vest, Harness & Adjustable Restraint Lanyard.
